HOUSE RESOLUTION
Congratulating the WAIPAHU INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL 2007 JUNIOR ENGINEERING EXPO WINNERS
WHEREAS, science and math are at the forefront of needs in today's ever-evolving technological scene and young people adept at grasping and applying complex principles will be at the forefront of designers and planners who shape the landscape of society; and
WHEREAS, WAIPAHU INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL's whiz kids demonstrated their science aptitude and communication abilities when they scored top honors against 18 other schools in several categories at the 2007 Junior Engineering Expo held at the University of Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, DANTEN INOUYE, LANCEN DACLISON, and ZHAYLA-MARANDA ALDOZ captured first place in the Coaster Mania competition, using one roll of masking tape, four pairs of chopsticks, and only two sheets of oaktag to build a roller coaster with; entries being judged on the number of loops, u-turns, and spirals completed, with the final trick being a final jump into a cup; and
WHEREAS, DIANNE AGPAOA, TAYLOR FUJIUCHI, and FAITH FAUSTORILLA won first place in the Electromagnetic Fishing Pole contest, using only one wire, a nail, two screws, a piece of wood, and sand paper to build a fishing pole within 30 minutes with entries being judged on creativity and the "catching" of the most paperclip fish; and
WHEREAS, MELISSA MACABEO and JEROME CABALLERO, using only a $15 budget and all recycled materials, took first place in the Pendulum Design contest, a pendulum that was required to hit a golf ball into a target five feet away; and
WHEREAS, ABIGAIL MACADAMIA, ZHAYLA-MARANDA ALDOZ, MARY PAGE DIAZ, and FAITH FAUSTORILLA constructed a bridge using only five hundred popsicle sticks and a bottle of glue, and took first for oral presentation in the Popsicle Stick Bridge competition; and
WHEREAS, RACHEL WONG, JHONELL TRISTAN ABUCAY, MIKE RAGASPI, and CHRISTINE RIOCA participated in the Engineering and Science HEXathalon in an event that challenged students' ingenuity under time constraints; the students were given 6 tasks to complete in 12 minutes where two tasks were multiple choice questions covering astronomy and math, and three activities required them to perform and construct objects, including the tallest tower using only spaghetti noodles and marshmallows; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fourth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2008, that this body hereby congratulates and commends WAIPAHU INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL, its student competitors, and their teachers for their thrilling success in the 2007 Junior Engineering Expo, and extends its warmest aloha and best wishes for continued success in all future endeavors.
