HOUSE RESOLUTION
congratulating Mitchell Otani as Hawaii's 2007 national distinguished principaL; Dr. john Brummel as Hawaii's nominee for national association of secondary school principals and METLIFE national principal of the year; and aina haina Elementary school, ala wai elementary school, AND holualoa elementary school as the 2008 blue ribbon schools of the state of hawaii.
WHEREAS, in light of the important role the public education system plays in building Hawaii's future, it is always the pleasure and privilege of the Hawaii State House of Representatives to recognize those exceptional individuals who have made significant achievements in the profession of education and have thus inspired our state's youth and otherwise encouraged and involved people in surrounding communities; and
WHEREAS, MITCHELL OTANI, who has been a principal at Kaneohe Elementary School since 1991, has created a professional learning community in which best practices are shared, high standards prevail, teacher leaders are nurtured, and systems and teams are in place, laying the foundation for student achievement and earning him recognition as Hawaii's 2007 National Distinguished Principal; and
WHEREAS, as principal at Mililani High School, DR. JOHN BRUMMEL has proven himself as an outstanding secondary school leader by ensuring high-quality learning opportunities for students, and has been chosen as Hawaii's nominee for National Association of Secondary School Principals and MetLife National Principal of the Year; and
WHEREAS, through their dedication and commitment to serving our children in the schools, MITCHELL OTANI and DR. JOHN BRUMMEL have proven themselves worthy of being honored as inspirational principals and role models for our public school community; and
WHEREAS, AINA HAINA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL provides a learning community in which new and emerging technologies are incorporated into the curriculum, ensuring that every student has access to the extensive technology resources and services available; and
WHEREAS, ALA WAI ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, which despite having a population of students of which nearly 36 percent are English for Second Language Learners and over 60 percent receive free- or reduced-price lunches, has helped its students achieve high educational goals; and
WHEREAS, HOLUALOA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, which serves a native Hawaiian student population that makes up at least 30 percent of the student body, has inspired the dedication of its teachers, administrators, parents, and students to learning, and has thus been recognized for its academic excellence; and
WHEREAS, AINA HAINA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, ALA WAI ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, and HOLUALOA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL have been named Hawaii's 2008 Blue Ribbon Schools for their significant progress in closing the achievement gap and inspiring and guiding its students to achieve at the highest levels; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fourth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2008, that this body hereby recognizes, congratulates, and honors MITCHELL OTANI for being recognized as Hawaii's 2007 National Distinguished Principal; DR. JOHN BRUMMEL for being chosen Hawaii's nominee for National Association of Secondary School Principals and MetLife National Principal of the Year; and AINA HAINA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, ALA WAI ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, and HOLUALOA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL on being named Hawaii's 2008 Blue Ribbon Schools, and extends them all its most sincere mahalo for a job well done.
