HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

commends and congratulates THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY HAWAII PACIFIC, INC., on its 60 years of diligent and dedicated service towards the goal of no more cancer in Hawaii through risk reduction, education, research, and advocacy.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, through the Atherton family’s leadership, THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY HAWAII PACIFIC, INC., opened its doors in 1948, beginning a grassroots tradition of mobilizing our communities to fight this disease through early detection, education, advocacy, and service; and

 

     WHEREAS, THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY HAWAII PACIFIC, INC., has grown and flourished across the State, providing services to patients that include transportation assistance, wig fittings, nutritional supplements and emotional and physical support through programs like Look Good, Feel Better; and

 

     WHEREAS, THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY HAWAII PACIFIC, INC.'s innovative approach to preventing cancer, include the adoption of the "Active For Life" program by the Department of Health and the advocacy and implementation of our comprehensive smoke-free workplace law; and

 

     WHEREAS, among THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY HAWAII PACIFIC, INC.'s programs in Hawaii are Camp Anuenue, a week long summer camp helping children with cancer find strength, hope, and friendship; Hooulu Me Ka Ikaika, a program for teens and young adults dealing with the disease; and Families Can Survive, helping families learn how to cope with cancer through the power of love and cooperation; and

 

     WHEREAS, THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY HAWAII PACIFIC, INC.'s signature fund-raiser is "Relay For Life", an annual overnight event in which teams walk all night to represent the fact that “cancer never sleeps, now has teams in 21 communities in Hawaii and one on Guam, and in its first 15 years the nationwide event has raised more than half a billion dollars for cancer research and patient services while bringing together millions of people to celebrate survivorship and to remember loved ones touched by or lost to this disease; and

 

     WHEREAS, THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY HAWAII PACIFIC, INC., is celebrating its 60th year of service in Hawaii; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fourth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2008, that this body hereby commends and congratulates THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY HAWAII PACIFIC, INC., on its 60 years of diligent and dedicated service towards the goal of no more cancer in Hawaii through risk reduction, education, research, and advocacy, and wishes the Society continued success in achieving its goals.
