WHEREAS, Hawaii's dependence on petroleum makes the state vulnerable to supply and market disruptions and negatively impacts the environment; and

WHEREAS, renewable energy pilot projects with the installation of photovoltaic and windmill systems using solar and wind energy, respectively, could produce electricity to power school facilities, including air conditioning; and

WHEREAS, the installation of a net energy metered system would allow the schools to connect and feed any unused electricity produced by the renewable energy systems to the electric grid for the use of the surrounding community; and

WHEREAS, the renewable energy projects would encourage and promote increased awareness of renewable energy technologies among students, teachers, and the community; and

WHEREAS, the energy cost savings resulting from the renewable energy systems over the long-term will make up for the initial cost of installation of the systems; and

WHEREAS, Lahainaluna High School, Lahaina Intermediate School, and Princess Nahienaena Elementary School located on the west side of the island of Maui, receives a substantial amount of sunlight and wind and are ideal locations to implement renewable energy pilot projects; now, therefore,
