HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

REQUESTING that THE University of Hawaii SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WORK dedicate its school in honor of mYRON "pINKY" tHOMPSON, BY Changing ITS NAME to "tHE MYRON THOMPSON SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WORK".

 

 


     WHEREAS, Myron "Pinky" Thompson was a visionary who helped to create a legacy that continues to live on today; and

 

     WHEREAS, he played a vital role in the establishment of the Native Hawaiian health care system, Alu Like, Inc., and the Polynesian Voyaging Society; and

 

     WHEREAS, Pinky earned his bachelor's degree in sociology from Colby College, and then went on to earn his master's degree in social work from the University of Hawaii; and

 

     WHEREAS, he served as the State Administrator under Governor John A. Burns; and

 

     WHEREAS, Pinky also served as the Executive Director of the Hawaii Department of Social Services and Housing where he gained national recognition fighting for welfare benefits for the people of Hawaii; and

 

     WHEREAS, in addition, Pinky also served as a trustee for the Bishop Estate where he helped to develop early childhood education programs through Kamehameha Schools; and

 

     WHEREAS, Myron "Pinky" Thompson was an extraordinary individual who has made numerous contributions to the Native Hawaiian community where he will always remain a leader and a role model, continuing to inspire future generations of Hawaii's youth; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fourth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2008, that the University of Hawaii Board of Regents is requested to dedicate the University of Hawaii School of Social Work in honor of Myron "Pinky" Thompson, by changing the school's name to "The Myron Thompson School of Social Work"; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a plaque be placed at the entrance to the School of Social Work explaining Myron "Pinky" Thompson's contributions to the University of Hawaii and the State of Hawaii; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Governor of the State of Hawaii; the University of Hawaii Board of Regents, the Dean of the University of Hawaii School of Social Work; and Hawaii's congressional delegation.
