HOUSE RESOLUTION
commending malia caldwell and malia fyffe for their contributions to the citizenship programs of kealakehe high school and for winning the annenberg FOUNDATION trip to the united states supreme court.
WHEREAS, active participation in the society in which we live is an essential aspect of developing strong citizenship and continuing the democratic legacy of our forefathers; and
WHEREAS, Kealakehe High School Seniors MALIA CALDWELL and MALIA FYFFE have demonstrated outstanding aptitude and achievement in the realms of academics, athletics, and community; and
WHEREAS, MALIA CALDWELL and MALIA FYFFE have been active participants in the Citizenship First Program at Kealakehe High School and assumed leadership roles in their school and neighborhood communities; and
WHEREAS, having written a compelling and eloquent essay on important constitutional issues and then having demonstrated outstanding knowledge and character in an interview with a judge, a school superintendent, a school principal, and one of their teachers, MALIA CALDWELL and MALIA FYFFE won a demanding and selective competition for an Annenberg Foundation trip to Washington D.C.; and
WHEREAS, while representing their school and our state in the nation's Capitol, MALIA CALDWELL and MALIA FYFFE met with Justices of the Supreme Court and debated issues of national importance with other similarly gifted high school students, ranging from due process protections of the 14th Amendment to judicial interpretation of the Constitution; and
WHEREAS, the students' exchange with the Justices was videotaped for the purposes of creating an instructional video for students across the country, extending knowledge and propagating responsible and informed citizenship; and
WHEREAS, in their commitment to citizenship, education, and community, MALIA CALDWELL and MALIA FYFFE serve as examples to all of us and are deserving of our heartfelt praise and congratulations; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fourth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2008, that this body hereby honors and commends MALIA CALDWELL and MALIA FYFFE for their excellent work which led them to win the Annenberg Foundation trip to the Supreme Court, and extends to them its warmest aloha and congratulations for a job well done.
