HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

requesting the department of education to replace all incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent lighting.

     WHEREAS, replacing incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent lighting reduces greenhouse gases, mercury emissions, and energy expenses; and

     WHEREAS, Energy Star qualified compact fluorescent lights use about seventy-five per cent less energy and last up to ten times longer than incandescent bulbs; and

     WHEREAS, according to Energy Star, a federal program to help consumers save money and protect the environment through energy efficient products and practices, if every American household replaced just one incandescent bulb with a qualified compact fluorescent light, the national annual energy costs would be reduced by $600,000,000 and greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those of more than eight hundred thousand cars would be prevented; and

     WHEREAS, if such abundant savings could be achieved by changes in individual households, then similar efforts by schools would realize even lager-scale benefits; and

     WHEREAS, by adopting energy-efficient strategies, schools make a commitment to both their students and the environment; now, therefore,

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fourth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2008, the Senate concurring, that the Department of Education, is requested to support and promote energy efficiency in public schools and to replace all school incandescent lighting with compact fluorescent lighting; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Governor, the Superintendent of Education, and the Chairperson of the Board of Education.
