HOUSE CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
REQUESTING that Pahoa HIgh and Intermediate School dedicate its gymnasium in honor of former Representative helene H. hale, by changing the name OF THE GYMNASIUM to "Helene H. hale GYMNASIUM."
WHEREAS, former Hawaii State Representative Helene H. Hale was the first African-American elected to office in Hawaii and the first woman to hold an executive position in local government since Queen Liliuokalani; and
WHEREAS, a resident of Hawaii since 1947, Representative Hale was elected to the Big Island Board of Supervisors after the Democrats came to power in 1954 and served ten years including a term as chairwoman, which is equivalent to a mayoral position, from 1963 to 1965; and
WHEREAS, Representative Hale helped lead the Big Island through the transition to statehood and was one of the founders of Hilo's Merrie Monarch Festival; and
WHEREAS, Representative Hale served as a delegate to the 1978 Constitutional Convention and later, between 1980 and 1994, served a total of ten years on the Hawaii County Council; and
WHEREAS, in 2000, at the age of 82, Representative Hale won election to the State House of Representatives, and during her tenure served as Chair of the Committee on International Affairs; and
WHEREAS, Representative Hale is widely admired as a strong advocate for improved mental health care, sustainable development, and world peace; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fourth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2008, the Senate concurring, that Pahoa High and Intermediate School is requested to dedicate its new gymnasium in honor of former Representative Helene H. Hale, by changing the name of the gymnasium to "Helene H. Hale Gymnasium" and place a plaque near the entrance explaining her contributions to the Pahoa community, the Big Island, and the State of Hawaii; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Principal of Pahoa High and Intermediate School, the Chairperson of the Board of Education, the Superintendent of Education, the Governor of the State of Hawaii, and the Honorable Helene H. Hale.
