HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

urging developers of a CEMETERY in hawaii kai to avoid mercury emissions from any proposed crematorium.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, sixty-nine acres of Kamilo Nui Valley in Hawaii Kai has been designated for a cemetery; and

 

     WHEREAS, the cemetery is planned by PRM, which is in a joint venture to develop what will be known as Paradise Memorial Park; and

 

     WHEREAS, many cemeteries also offer cremation as part of their burial services, and these crematoria can emit high levels of toxins, including mercury, a highly toxic metal that is used for dental fillings which would be released into the air when a body is cremated,

 

     WHEREAS, any exposure to mercury can be potentially hazardous to the health and well-being of any living organism and mercury exposure has been linked to birth defects, kidney disease, and multiple sclerosis; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-Fourth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session 2008, the Senate concurring, that any crematorium that PRM is planning for Paradise Memorial Park be equipped with the appropriate filters that can capture the toxins that are emitted during cremation or that any plans to build a crematorium be abandoned; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to PRM and the Hawaii Kai Neighborhood Board.
