HOUSE CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
Recommending student athletics be considered as a semester credit per year of physical education towards a hawaii high school diploma in public schools.
WHEREAS, the United State Department of Health recommends at least a minimum of 60 minutes of physical activity three times a week; and
WHEREAS, student athletes average about 8 hours a week of exercise, not including matches or games, and the Physical Education course estimates three hours a week of exercising resulting in over three times the recommended amount; and
WHEREAS, by having physical education as an automatic credit, it allows the student athlete to enroll in other courses during the school year and will help them fulfill the new high school requirements of 24 credits; and
WHEREAS, the remaining semester of physical education should be aimed at physical education, to provide the student athlete with an education of fitness and healthy lifestyle such of a non-athlete would; and
WHEREAS, the main objective of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association is to increase participation by offering a variety of sports to promote educational benefits of all students; and
WHEREAS, by promoting participation, it exceeds the benchmark of Standard 3, Active Lifestyle, of the Hawaii state standards physical education for grades 9-12; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fourth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2008, the Senate concurring, that the Hawaii Department of Education recommends for students who are active in sports use it as a physical education credit rather than taking a required class during their high school year; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Governor of the State of Hawaii, the Board of Education, the Superintendent of Education, the Hawaii State Student Council, the executive director of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association, the executive secretary of the Oahu Interscholastic Association, the executive director of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, the executive secretary of the Kauai Interscholastic Federation, the executive secretary of the Maui Interscholastic League, and the executive secretary of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation.
