HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION TO PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS TO LEARN ABOUT HAWAII LABOR HISTORY.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, Democracy is founded upon the basic right of citizens to free speech and the right to assemble together to address their grievances; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Legislature recognizes the importance of educating Hawaii's students about the history and accomplishments of working people and the labor movement in this state; and

 

     WHEREAS, historical material exists at the University of Hawaii's (UH) Center for Labor Education and Research (CLEAR), UH Industrial Relations Center, Department of Labor and Industrial Relations, and local unions; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fourth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2008, the Senate concurring, that the Legislature requests DOE in conjunction with CLEAR and labor groups to plan educational opportunities including but not limited to speech and writing contests, debates, research, art and photo contests, displays, educational scholarships, field trips, seminars, and internships in conjunction with the annual Labor Day holiday; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that DOE is requested to provide labor education learning experiences for students appropriate to their grade level and consistent with educational history and social science content standards; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Governor, Director of Labor and Industrial Relations, Superintendent of Education, Board of Education, President of UH, Director of the UH Industrial Relations Center, Director of CLEAR, President of the Hawaii State AFL-CIO, President of the Hawaii State Teachers Association, President of the Hawaii Government Employees Association and Executive Director of the Hawaii Building and Construction Trades Council.
