WHEREAS, despite rapid advances in medical technology and research, men still have a shorter average life span than women; and

WHEREAS, diseases that solely afflict men such as testicular cancer and prostate cancer represent some of the biggest health risks for men; and

WHEREAS, men die of cancer at 1.5 times the rate for women; and

WHEREAS, all ten of the leading causes of death impact men at a higher percentage than women; and

WHEREAS, one of the biggest obstacles to improving the health of men is a lack of awareness and apathy that many men have towards obtaining medical treatment; and

WHEREAS, educating the public and health care providers about the importance of a healthy lifestyle and early detection of male health problems may eventually lead to reduced mortality rates from diseases such as cancer and heart disease; and

WHEREAS, men who are educated about the value of preventive health will be more likely to participate in health screening programs; and

WHEREAS, the Men's Health Network worked with the United States Congress to develop National Men's Health Week as a special campaign to help educate men and their families about the importance of positive health attitudes and preventive health practices; and

WHEREAS, Hawaii Men's Health Week will focus on a broad range of men's health issues, including heart disease, diabetes, prostate, testicular, and colon cancer; and

WHEREAS, citizens of this State are encouraged to increase their awareness of the importance of a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, and medical check-ups; and

WHEREAS, the Governor issued a proclamation on March 2, 2004, declaring June 14 through 20, 2004, to be Men's Health Week; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fourth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2008, the Senate concurring, that the Legislature officially recognizes the second week of June as Men's Health Week; and
