A BILL FOR AN ACT


 

 

relating to the OBSERVANCE OF THE asian lunar new year.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  The legislature finds that the Asian Lunar calendar is the oldest calendar in use today with the longest chronological record in history, dating from 2600 B.C.  The lunar new year is a time of commemoration, celebration, and great significance for millions of people throughout the world and in Hawai`i, as this state is home to many citizens of Chinese, Korean, and Southeast Asian descent.

     The purpose of this Act is to officially recognize the Asian Lunar New Year.

     SECTION 2.  Chapter 8, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

     "§8-      Asian Lunar New Year.   The day designated as the first day of the new year on the Asian lunar calendar shall be designated as Asian Lunar New Year Day.  This day is not and shall not be construed as a state holiday."

     SECTION 3.  New statutory material is underscored.

     SECTION 4.  This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
