A BILL FOR AN ACT

RELATING TO PUBLIC UTILITIES.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

     SECTION 1.  Chapter 269, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

     "§269-  Consideration of energy conservation, energy efficiency, and load management. In exercising its authority and duties under this chapter regarding approvals of power purchase agreements and new generation and transmission facilities, the commission shall consider whether present and reasonably foreseeable future demand for electric services could be provided in a more cost-effective manner through energy conservation, energy efficiency, and load management programs and measures."

     SECTION 2.  New statutory material is underscored.

     SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
