A BILL FOR AN ACT
MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $1 or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2007-2008 and the same sum or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2008-2009 for the establishment of one full-time equivalent (1.00 FTE) robotics education coordinator and part-time equivalent robotics specialists to coordinate robotics education among the University of Hawaii, the department of education, and other agencies and organizations in the state, whose duties shall include but not be limited to:
(1) Taking inventory of existing robotics education programs and assisting program coordinators;
(2) Working with program coordinators and the department of education to align the activities to standards in mathematics and science;
(3) Working with program coordinators to identify and provide relevant professional development for teachers and mentors for each program;
(4) Providing professional development on grant writing and identifying grant sources;
(5) Recruiting and identifying community mentors throughout the state;
(6) Developing and implementing a longitudinal data collection tool on student interest in robotics programs and careers;
(7) Increasing participation in robotics programs;
(8) Seeking opportunities for Hawaii to host tournaments, conferences, and related events related to robotics;
(9) Developing partnerships with industry and other organizations in support of robotics;
(10) Convening an annual state conference on robotics to mentor new teachers and schools;
(11) Establishing a robotics education committee that meets regularly with specific goals and outcomes;
(12) Establishing an internet website that showcases each of the different programs and links to the main web sites;
(13) Participating in community events to showcase student outcomes;
(14) Working with the governor's drug free task force;
(15) Developing an outreach program; and
(16) Developing a summer institute on robotics.
The sums appropriated shall be expended by the University of Hawaii for the purposes of this Act.
SECTION 2. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2007.
