A BILL FOR AN ACT


 

 

RELATING TO THE HAWAIIAN LANGUAGE.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  The legislature finds that the preservation of the Hawaiian language is of paramount importance toward the goal of preserving the Hawaiian culture.  Since 1978, when the State reestablished Hawaiian as one of its official languages along with English, the Hawaiian language has enjoyed a vital renewal. 

     The purpose of this Act is to require the department of accounting and general services to develop a plan to have all signs in the State Capitol in both English and Hawaiian, to reflect the two official languages of our state.

     SECTION 2.  The department of accounting and general services shall develop a plan to have all signs in the State Capitol in both English and Hawaiian.   The department of accounting and general services shall prepare and submit the plan, including proposed legislation, if applicable, to the legislature no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the regular session of 2009.

     SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2025.
