A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

 

relating to education.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  Chapter 302A, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section in part II, subpart C to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

     "§302A‑    Cultural activities education program.  (a)  The department shall establish and administer a cultural activities education program that shall focus primarily on providing an array of cultural activities and programs at each public school for students from grades kindergarten to twelve.

     (b)  The department shall:

     (1)  Set the prerequisites and priorities for enrollment in the cultural activities education program;

     (2)  Establish the requirements for and employ necessary instructors and programs that offer cultural activities to students;

     (3)  Explore and consider all available cultural activities in order to provide a wide representation of various cultures;

     (4)  Coordinate with an array of cultural programs in the State; and

     (5)  Purchase, rent, or acquire by gift, materials and equipment necessary for the program.

     (c)  The department may adopt rules pursuant to chapter 91 necessary to effectuate the purposes of this section."

     SECTION 2.  There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $           or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2008-2009 for the establishment of a cultural activities education program for public school students.

     The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of education for the purposes of this Act.

     SECTION 3.  New statutory material is underscored.

     SECTION 4.  This Act shall take effect upon its approval; provided that section 2 shall take effect on July 1, 2008.
