A BILL FOR AN ACT


 

 

making an appropriation to the university of hawaii.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  The legislature finds that the Institute for Peace at the University of Hawaii requires additional funding to conduct meaningful research in peace studies and conflict resolution.  The institute is experiencing difficulty in attracting research grants due to its lack of sufficient staffing and funding to support basic operations.  The institute currently lacks a central core of academic and administrative personnel who are appointed on a permanent or long-term basis.

     The purpose of this Act is to appropriate funds for the institute to staff its basic operations and develop its programs.

     SECTION 2.  There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $525,498 or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2008-2009 for staff positions, research projects, and conferences at the Institute for Peace as follows:

     (1)  Administrative position (FTE):        $41,000

     (2)  Director (FTE):                       $79,498

     (3)  Assistant professor (FTE):            $55,000

     (4)  Research project:                     $100,000

     (5)  International conference:             $250,000

     The sum appropriated shall be expended by the University of Hawaii for the purposes of this Act.

     SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2008.
