TWENTY-FOURTH LEGISLATURE, 2008

H.D. 1

STATE OF HAWAII

S.D. 1

A BILL FOR AN ACT

RELATING TO THE KALOKO HOUSING PROGRAM.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1.  The legislature finds that next to Oahu, the county of Hawaii has the largest number of homeless individuals, individuals at-risk of becoming homeless, and those called the hidden homeless.  West Hawaii is particularly in need of more housing and support services for the homeless because its only homeless shelter needs to be replaced.  There is a proposal to build a cluster of fifty multifamily homes to provide housing for the homeless and related support services.

The purpose of this Act is to appropriate funds for the design, planning, and construction of the Kaloko housing program in West Hawaii to help families affected by homelessness.

SECTION 2.  There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $           or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2008-2009 for the design, planning, and construction of the Kaloko housing program in West Hawaii.

The sum appropriated shall be expended by the county of Hawaii for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2008.
