SENATE RESOLUTION

 

 

HONORING AND MAINTAINING THE USS ARIZONA MARINE CORPS REMEMBRANCE IN ITS CURRENT LOCATION.

 

 


     WHEREAS, the USS ARIZONA Marine Corps Remembrance was created and dedicated in November of 2005 at Pearl Harbor Navy Base Hawaii, honoring the 88 Marines who served on the USS ARIZONA as well as the 73 Marines who are still entombed; and

 

     WHEREAS, this seven ton bronze monument honors all sea-going Marines, who have been an integral part of the Department of the Navy since 10 November 1775; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Marine Remembrance dedicated by General Michael Hagee, 33rd Commandant of the Marine Corps, is a salute to an indomitable spirit of the Navy Marine Corps team; and

 

     WHEREAS, on 10 November 2005, General Hagee gave a compelling quote that was felt by all "when I see the Navy and Marine Flags flying high over this memorial....my heart swells"; and

 

     WHEREAS, our Corps of Marines are fighting and dying on a continuing basis in foreign lands; and

 

     WHEREAS, there has been an absence of recognition for the Marine Corps contributions at Pearl Harbor for many years; and

 

     WHEREAS, this Marine Remembrance is in the perfect location, overlooking their entombed shipmates from 7 December 1941, Day of Infamy; and

 

     WHEREAS, Marines today have their promotion and retirement celebrations at this hallowed site, overlooking the USS ARIZONA; and

 

     WHEREAS, this Marine Remembrance is owned and maintained by the Armed Services YMCA, which is a venerable and long honored organization, and this Remembrance was funded with private donations and erected by Marine Corps veterans; and

 

     WHEREAS, a docent program now educates Pearl Harbor Navy guest on the history of sea-going Marines serving on all major Navy ships; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-fourth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2007, that this Marine Remembrance be honored and revered in its current location in perpetuity; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to General Jim Conway, Lt. General John Goodman, Brigadier General Steve Hummer, Department of the Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorn, and the Director of the National Park Service Mary Bomar.
