HOUSE RESOLUTION
CONGRATULATING DR. JEFFREY AKAKA UPON HIS ASSUMPTION OF THE OFFICE OF SPEAKER OF THE ASSEMBLY OF THE AMERICAN PSYCHIATRIC ASSOCIATION.
WHEREAS, the American Psychiatric Association is a medical specialty society recognized world-wide composed of over 35,000 U.S. and international member physicians working together to ensure humane care and effective treatment of all persons with mental disorder, including mental retardation and substance-related disorders; and
WHEREAS, DR. JEFFREY AKAKA, son of the late Reverend Abraham Akaka and nephew to U.S. Senator Daniel Akaka, is an associate clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Hawaii at Manoa's Department of Psychiatry and the medical director of the Diamond Head Community Medical Health Center; and
WHEREAS, DR. JEFFREY AKAKA joined the American Psychiatric Association in 1992 as a deputy representative of the Caucus of American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian Psychiatrists, and since that time, has served the American Psychiatric Association in numerous capacities, including the committee on Public and Community Psychiatry, Procedures, and Planning, the Assembly Executive Committee, the Committee on Government Relations, the Joint Commission on Government Relations, as Area 7's deputy representative, the Joint Reference Committee, as an American Psychiatric Association delegate to the American Medical Association, and as the Assembly's Recorder; and
WHEREAS, DR. JEFFREY AKAKA also served on Hawaii's Medical Advisory Board under two different governors, and served on President Clinton's Committee on Mental Retardation; and
WHEREAS, DR. JEFFREY AKAKA tirelessly promotes his profession and the provision of mental health services to those requiring this much-needed health care; and
WHEREAS, DR. JEFFREY AKAKA not only serves Hawaii in a medical capacity, but also as an Ambassador of Aloha who faithfully promotes Hawaii as a viable location for business-related tourism, such as medical conventions; and
WHEREAS, DR. JEFFREY AKAKA helped to secure Honolulu as the location for the American Psychiatric Association's meeting in 2011, which is expected to bring 18,000 psychiatrists to the island and generate $50 million in visitor spending; and
WHEREAS, DR. JEFFREY AKAKA also succeeded in convincing the American Medical Association, an even larger organization, to bring their convention to Hawaii this year; and
WHEREAS, in 2006, DR. JEFFREY AKAKA won election as the American Psychiatric Association Assembly's speaker-elect; and
WHEREAS, in 2007, DR. JEFFREY AKAKA will assume the office of Speaker of the American Psychiatric Association's Assembly; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fourth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2007, that this body congratulates DR. JEFFREY AKAKA upon his assumption of the office of Speaker of the Assembly of the American Psychiatric Association.
