HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

Recognizing the GIRL SCOUTS ON THE OCCASION OF THEIR 95TH ANNIVERSARY AS AN ORGANIZATION IN THE UNITED STATES of AMERICA and THE 90TH ANNIVERSARY AS AN ORGANIZATION IN HAWAII.

 

 


     WHEREAS, in 1917, Queen Lili`uokalani and Kamehameha School for Girls teacher, Florence Lowe, supported the earliest efforts to establish the Girl Scout Movement in Hawaii by sponsoring the territory's first two girl Scout troops, thereby making the Girl Scout Council of Hawaii the oldest Girl Scout council west of the Mississippi River; and

 

     WHEREAS, throughout the history of Girl Scouts in Hawaii, girls have been encouraged to develop and act upon a meaningful set of values that reflect their personal beliefs and incorporate the fundamental principles of the Girl Scout Movement as stated in the Girl Scout Promise and Law; and

 

     WHEREAS, within the troop setting and under the guidance of caring adults who have served as inspiring role models, girls have engaged in developmentally-appropriate, hands-on experiences that have taught them about the true meaning of leadership and friendship; and

 

     WHEREAS, since its inception, thousands upon thousands of girls and women in Hawaii, including today's 5,700 Girl Scouts,

have benefited from their participation in the Girl Scout Program resulting in girls and women assuming key leadership positions throughout the State of Hawaii; and

 

     WHEREAS, March,2007, marks the 90th Anniversary of the Girl Scout Movement in Hawaii, making the Girl Scout Council of Hawaii the State's oldest and largest organization dedicated solely to the betterment of girls; and

 

     WHEREAS, March, 2007, also marks the 95th Anniversary of the Girl Scout Movement in the United States of America, making the Girls Scouts of the USA the nation's oldest and largest organization dedicated solely to the betterment of girls; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fourth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2007, that this body marks the celebration of both momentous occasions, Girl Scouts of the USA's 95th Anniversary and the Girl Scout Council of Hawaii's 90th Anniversary and salutes Girl Scouts as it fulfills its mission of the building of girls' courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Girl Scout Council of Hawaii and the Girl Scouts of the USA.
