WHEREAS, the KAILUA HIGH SCHOOL SURFRIDER ROBOTICS TEAM has spent hours on end preparing for the rigors of competition in challenges that both increase one's knowledge of the ocean as a source of energy and food, and help one's development of technical problem-solving and teamwork abilities; and
WHEREAS, the KAILUA HIGH SCHOOL SURFRIDER ROBOTICS TEAM has distinguished itself by placing in the top ten in the prestigious annual International Student ROV Competition that was held in June 2006, at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas; and

WHEREAS, the ROV's mission was to take an electronic module to the bottom of a pool and accomplish several tasks, and the team was able to complete the mission in just 10 minutes, defeating dozens of teams; and
WHEREAS, the KAILUA HIGH SCHOOL SURFRIDER ROBOTICS TEAM has once again been invited to compete in the annual competition in June 2007, this time in Newfoundland, and the challenge will involve conducting underwater experiments that relate to solar icecaps; and
WHEREAS, the KAILUA HIGH SCHOOL SURFRIDER ROBOTICS TEAM has also proved its mettle by winning the state championship in the Hawaii Underwater Robotic Competition that was held in November 2006, at the Duke Kahanamoku pool on the University of Hawaii at Manoa campus; and
WHEREAS, the team that participated in this regional challenge performed tremendously well in each of the missions that involved exploration of the National Whale Sanctuary in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, as well as in its presentation of the engineering and technical report; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fourth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2007, that this body hereby commends and congratulates the KAILUA HIGH SCHOOL SURFRIDER ROBOTICS TEAM and its teacher, David Izumi, for their outstanding achievements and contributions to the field of marine technology, and extends its warmest aloha and best wishes for continued success in all future endeavors.
