HOUSE RESOLUTION

REQUESTING D.H. HORTON to SELL LAND PRESENTLY IN AGRICULTURAL CULTIVATION TO AN AGRICULTURAL INTEREST TO PRESERVE THE AGRICULTURAL ACTIVITIES ON THE LAND.

WHEREAS, D.H. Horton recently purchased approximately one thousand six hundred acres of land on the Ewa plains from Campbell Estate; and

WHEREAS, a portion of those lands are prime agricultural lands leased to farmers under leases that were originally extended by the Campbell Estate; and

WHEREAS, these farmers are presently actively cultivating crops on those lands for sale on the local fresh produce market; and

WHEREAS, in addition to their agricultural benefits, the farming activities of these farmers provide respite in the form of an aesthetically pleasing green belt, to the expanding urban growth on the Ewa plains; and

WHEREAS, these farmers would like to continue to farm the lands and not have to relocate to other lands that may not have the necessary agricultural infrastructural support required for active agricultural activities; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fourth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2007, that D.H. Horton is requested to make the lands that are presently under cultivation by current farmers available for either:

     (1)  Purchase by these farmers or other agricultural parties that desire to continue agricultural activities on the land; or

     (2)  A long-term agricultural lease of the lands with these farmers or other agricultural parties that desire to continue agricultural activities on the land; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to Mr. Michael Jones, President, Schuler Division, and D.H. Horton.
