HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

urging the Governor to proclaim the last week in july of each year as conservation week.

 

 

 


WHEREAS, the upcoming 2007 Conservation Week celebration during the last week of July will include the Hawaii Conservation Conference, "My Hawaii" Winners Nature Writers' workshop, the Conservation Film Festival, and the Conservation Art Show; and

 

WHEREAS, Conservation Week will engage Hawaii's conservation leadership and people in understanding conservation issues of statewide significance and focus on solving the highest priority problems; and

 

     WHEREAS, Conservation Week will celebrate progress towards the effective management of Hawaii's native ecosystems; and

 

     WHEREAS, Conservation Week will have activities that support restoration of rare and endangered species and their habitats; and

 

WHEREAS, Conservation Week will promote the support of high-priority management-oriented conservation research and will strengthen the skills of conservation professionals;

 

     WHEREAS, Conservation Week will increase the public's awareness and involvement in conserving and managing Hawaii's natural environment; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fourth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2007, that the Governor is urged to proclaim the last week in July of each year as "Conservation Week", to promote effective, long-term management of Hawaii's natural resource through collaborative meetings, training, and outreach among land managers, scientists, educators, and the general public; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Governor is urged to seek the support, sponsorship, and involvement for Conservation Week from the following entities:  Hawaii Conservation Alliance and its member agencies, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration National Marine Sanctuaries Program, the National Park Service, the United Sates Department of Defense, Army Environmental Command, the United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service, the United States Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service Ecological Services, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service Refuges, the United States Geological Service Biological Resource Discipline, the Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Aquatic Resources, the Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife, the University of Hawaii-Manoa Center for Conservation Research and Training, the University of Hawaii-Hilo College of Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources, the Kamehameha Schools, the Bishop Museum, the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, the Nature Conservancy Hawaii, and the Pacific Writers' Connection; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the Governor.
