HOUSE CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
REQUESTING THE OFFICE OF HAWAIIAN AFFAIRS TO CONTINUE ITS EFFORTS TO CONVENE A TASK FORCE TO CONSIDER THE MERITS OF CREATING A MONUMENT TO THE CITIZENS OF THE KINGDOM OF HAWAI'I IN COLLABORATION WITH HAWAIIAN ORGANIZATIONS, RESPECTED KUPUNA IN THE HAWAIIAN COMMUNITY, AND THE DEPARTMENT OF LAND AND NATURAL RESOURCES.
WHEREAS, in 2006 the Twenty-third Legislature adopted House Concurrent Resolution No. 232, urging the Office of Hawaiian Affairs to convene a task force to consider the merits of creating a monument to the citizens of the Kingdom of Hawai'i in collaboration with Hawaiian organizations, respected kupuna in the Hawaiian community, and the Department of Land and Natural Resources; and
WHEREAS, the Office of Hawaiian Affairs supports the concept of a monument to honor and celebrate the citizens of the Kingdom of Hawai'i and contribute to a better understanding of Hawaiian culture, people, language, and history; and
WHEREAS, the Office of Hawaiian Affairs has initiated both information gathering and the process of convening a task force by identifying potential task force members from the Hawaiian community who possess the cultural background and demonstrated leadership and knowledge of Hawaiian issues; and
WHEREAS, in addition to identifying individual task members, the Office of Hawaiian Affairs has also identified potential task members to represent the Hawaiian organizations noted in House Concurrent Resolution No. 232 (2006); and
WHEREAS, the Office of Hawaiian Affairs desires to continue the work to create the task force and submit a report to the Legislature on its progress and findings; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fourth Legislature of the State of Hawai'i, Regular Session of 2007, the Senate concurring, that the Office of Hawaiian Affairs is urged to continue its efforts to convene the task force to complete the work requested in House Concurrent Resolution No. 232 (2006); and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the task force is requested to submit a report on its progress and findings to the Legislature no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the Regular Session of 2008; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Governor, Chairperson of the Board of Land and Natural Resources, and the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs who, in turn, is requested to transmit copies of this Concurrent Resolution to Palani Vaughan, Royal Order of Kamehameha, State Council of Hawaiian Homestead Associations, Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs, Kamehameha Schools, Native Hawaiian Culture and Arts Program of the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum, Queen Lili'uokalani Children's Center, and Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement.
