HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

requesting the governor to proclaim july 18, 2007, as sharon mabe day in the state of hawaii.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, a fundamental part of our culture of aloha includes honoring our elders and teaching future generations to study and learn from the devotion, dedication, deeds, and sacrifices of those who helped build our community and State; and

 

     WHEREAS, during the Regular Session of 2006, the House of Representatives of the 23rd Legislature of the State of Hawaii presented Sharon Mabe, a life-long Oahu resident, with a congratulatory certificate upon her retirement after nearly 35 years of employment with the United States Department of Defense, having served throughout the duration of the Cold War and into the modern era in critical posts at both Fort Shafter and Hickam Air Force Base; and

 

     WHEREAS, Sharon Mabe contributed to the continued defense and security of not only the islands of Hawaii, but the entire United States of America; and

 

     WHEREAS, despite being diagnosed with cancer and suffering greatly on a daily basis, Sharon Mabe continued for years in her civil service employment with the United States Pacific Air Forces (PACAF) assignments branch at Hickam Air Force Base; and

 

     WHEREAS, within less than three months of retirement and being honored by the 23rd Legislature with a congratulatory certificate for her devoted service, Sharon Mabe died of cancer, survived by her husband and daughter; and


     WHEREAS, the Legislature recognizes that the loss of a person who devoted their entire life to public service is a humbling reminder of the stresses, pressures, and strain that often accompanies the responsibilities of serving the people; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Legislature is both humbled by and thankful for the efforts of island residents such as Sharon Mabe and recognizes that there are many more like her who continue to serve selflessly; and

 

     WHEREAS, Sharon Mabe's service to our State and nation are fully in keeping with our state motto, which proclaims, "Ua mau ke ea o ka aina i ka pono", which is interpreted as "The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness"; and

 

     WHEREAS, the founders of these islands, who braved great danger, difficulty, and uncertainty to create a nation of righteousness, would be proud of persons such as Sharon Mabe; and

 

     WHEREAS, future generations of our keiki would do well to learn from the example of persons like Sharon Mabe; and

 

     WHEREAS, it is not uncommon to recognize persons of exceptional, conspicuous merit and hold their deeds in remembrance by naming certain days in their honor; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fourth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2007, the Senate concurring, that the Governor is respectfully requested to proclaim July 18, 2007, as Sharon Mabe Day in the State of Hawaii, commemorating not only the life of Sharon Mabe, but also the memory of the thousands of Hawaii residents who have struggled with and died of cancer; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature urges scientists, researchers, and physicians around the world to continue their aggressive pursuit for a cure for the terrible disease of cancer; and


     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Governor; the Cancer Research Center of Hawaii; the American Association for Cancer Research; and to Harris and Kimberly Mabe, surviving family members of Sharon Mabe.
