HOUSE CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
URGING THE DEPARTMENT OF LAND AND NATURAL RESOURCES TO STATION A LIFEGUARD AT MAKENA BEACH PARK.
WHEREAS, Oneloa or "Big Beach" at the Makena State Park on Maui is known as one of the most beautiful white sand beaches in the State that attracts thousands of tourists and local residents every year; and
WHEREAS, in addition to its accessibility, scenic views, and unspoiled beauty, "Big Beach" is also the site of a very dangerous shore break; and
WHEREAS, since 2004, at least four individuals have died in the surf at Big Beach, several individuals have been resuscitated on the beach by others on the scene, and numerous others have been injured; and
WHEREAS, these tragedies and injuries may not have occurred had there been lifeguard services available at Makena State Park; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fourth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2007, the Senate concurring, that the Department of Land and Natural Resources is urged to station a lifeguard at Makena State Park to help ensure the safety of swimmers and prevent any further tragedies; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Governor and Chairperson of the Board of Land and Natural Resources.
