HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

H.B. NO.

61

TWENTY-FOURTH LEGISLATURE, 2007

STATE OF HAWAII

A BILL FOR AN ACT

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR THE CENTER ON GERONTOLOGY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII AT MANOA.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1.  The legislature finds that the mission of the center on aging research and education is to assure the well-being of the State's older adults by stimulating and coordinating gerontological and aging instruction, research, and community services.

Currently, there is an urgent need to engage in gerontological research given the radical demographic shifts related to the growing aging population in Hawaii and in the Asia/Pacific region.

The purpose of this Act is to appropriate funds for five faculty positions for the center of gerontology at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

SECTION 2.  There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $350,000, or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2007-2008, and the same sum, or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2008-2009, for five faculty positions to staff the center on gerontology.

SECTION 3.  The sums appropriated shall be expended by the University of Hawaii for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 4.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2007.
