Appropriates funds to the department of public safety for the construction of an additional women's correctional center and facility.

A BILL FOR AN ACT

SECTION 1. The existing Women's Community Correctional Center is inadequate to accommodate all of Hawaii's female inmates. Hawaii's female inmates are additionally being housed in Kentucky, the Federal Detention Center, and the Oahu Community Correctional Center because the existing facility is inadequate.

The purpose of this Act is to appropriate funds to the department of public safety to construct an additional women's correctional center and facility in order to meet the needs of the current and projected number of female inmates.

SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $          , or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2006-2007, to plan, design, and construct an additional women's correctional center and facility.

SECTION 3. The sum appropriated shall be expended by the

department of accounting and general services for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2006.
