A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

RELATING TO VETERANS.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. Chapter 201G, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

"§201G- Iraq or Afghanistan war veteran, housing priority. Section 201G-111 notwithstanding, any United States citizen or permanent resident, domiciled in the State and who designated the State as their residence for federal tax purposes at the time of their entry into the Hawaii national guard, and who:

(1) As a member of the Hawaii national guard has served in Iraq for a total of at least ninety days at any time during the period from ninety days prior to the start of hostilities on March 20, 2003, in preparation for the start of hostilities, until the redeployment of the members of the armed forces out of Iraq; or

(2) As a member of the Hawaii national guard has served in Afghanistan for a total of at least ninety days at any time during the period from ninety days prior to the start of hostilities on or about October 7, 2001, in preparation of hostilities, until the redeployment of the members of the armed forces out of Afghanistan; and

(3) Meets the other qualifications for any housing project developed pursuant to chapter 201G,

shall be given first priority to that housing."

SECTION 2. New statutory material is underscored.

SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
