A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

making an appropriation for cultural education AND integration, language, employment, and legal services for immigrants from the freely associated states.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. The legislature finds that, pursuant to Act 225, Session Laws of Hawaii 2004, Leeward Community College was tasked with developing a program to provide services to students from the Freely Associated States in order to ensure their success in school through cultural education and integration, language, employment, and legal services. The Act, however, did not provide funding, nor did it authorize Leeward Community College to utilize general funds for purposes of the development or maintenance of the program.

The purpose of this Act is to appropriate funds to Leeward Community College for the continuation of the workforce development program established pursuant to Act 225, SLH 2004.

SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $          , or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2005-2006, and the same sum, or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2006-2007, for the workforce development program established pursuant to Act 225, SLH 2004 to provide services to immigrants from the Freely Associated States.

SECTION 3. The sums appropriated shall be expended by the University of Hawaii for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2005.
