A BILL FOR AN ACT
making an appropriation for lahainaluna high school.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. Lahainaluna high school was founded September 5, 1831 as a seminary boarding school for men taught by the missionaries. On April 8, 2006, the Lahainaluna school community will celebrate the school's one hundred and seventy-fifth anniversary at the annual David Malo Celebration. David Malo, Hawaii's first public school executive and superintendent for the entire Hawaiian Kingdom, was one of Lahainaluna's first twenty-five students. He was instrumental in translating English texts into Hawaiian so his people could expand their knowledge.
Each spring, Lahainaluna celebrates the Hawaiian culture and heritage by honoring David Malo in song and dance. Lahainaluna is the oldest school west of the Rockies, the only public boarding school in the United States and the only school with an alma mater written and sung only in the Hawaiian language. It is a school rich in culture and tradition, and steeped in Hawaiian history.
The purpose of this Act is to appropriate funds for Lahainaluna high school to commemorate its one hundred and seventy-fifth anniversary with programs and festivities.
SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $10,000, or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2005-2006, and the same sum, or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2006-2007, for Lahainaluna high school to commemorate its one hundred and seventy-fifth anniversary with programs and festivities.
SECTION 3. The sums appropriated shall be expended by the department of education for the purposes of this Act.
SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2005.
