REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF LAND AND NATURAL RESOURCES TO HONOR the first MONDAY in MAY AS HAWAII HISTORIC PRESERVATION AWARENESS DAY.
WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of the State to preserve the architecture, objects, and sites of the numerous cultures that make up our island community; and
WHEREAS, preservation of the history of our cultures not only helps to promote the tourism industry, it also helps to preserve for future generations the cultural identities of the various peoples that call Hawaii home; and
WHEREAS, historic preservation was recognized as an issue of statewide importance through the proclamation of the Governor, declaring the first Monday in May as Hawaii Historic Preservation Awareness Day, and with the introduction of legislation and resolutions that all seek to support the cause of preservation of historic sites; and
WHEREAS, the Department of Land and Natural Resources is charged with administering a comprehensive historic preservation program, including the stimulation of public interest in historic preservation, such as developing and implementing interpretive programs for historic properties listed on or eligible for the Hawaii register of historic places; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-third Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2006, that the Board of Land and Natural Resources is requested to honor the first Monday in May as "Historic Preservation Awareness Day" by holding events and activities that will stimulate public interest in historic preservation; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the Chair of the Board of Land and Natural Resources.
