HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

commending the efforts of the ONE Campaign and inviting all citizens to join in recognizing and supporting the ONE Campaign as it spreads its message throughout the nation and the world.

 

 

WHEREAS, healthy citizens and healthy communities are the centerpieces of any strong and vibrant society; and

WHEREAS, residents of Hawaii are among the most generous people in the world; and

WHEREAS, it is in the best values of the host culture of Kanaka Maoli and Americans to assist those in need; and

WHEREAS, one billion people around the world survive on less than $1 per day; and

WHEREAS, a pact among people of the planet that supports directing assistance and aid for basic human needs--education, health, adequate nutrition, clean water, and care for all children--would transform the futures and hopes of an entire generation in the poorest nations as well as those contributing to positive change; and

WHEREAS, ONE is a new effort by Americans to rally all Americans--one by one--to fight the emergence of global AIDS and extreme poverty and is a collaboration of eleven of America's most well-known and respected nonprofit advocacy and humanitarian organizations:

(1) Bread for the World;

(2) CARE;

(3) DATA;

(4) International Medical Corps;

(5) International Rescue Committee;

(6) Mercy Corps;

(7) Oxfam America;

(8) Plan USA;

(9) Save the Children US;

(10) World Concern; and

(11) World Vision; and

WHEREAS, ONE is a new, nonpartisan, political movement unprecedented in American history and part of a rapidly growing global movement to make poverty a thing of the past in our generation and its campaign--ONE: The Campaign to Make Poverty History--believes in direct cooperation to assist our neighbors in the global civil society; and

WHEREAS, the State of Hawaii shares in the desire to make a difference and wishes to join with the ONE campaign and other states and cities around the country; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-third Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2006, that this body commends the efforts of the ONE Campaign and urges all citizens to join in recognizing and supporting the ONE Campaign as it spreads its message throughout the nation and the world; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the ONE Campaign and the Governor.
