RESOLUTION
Expressing strong support for maintaining peace in the asia-pacific with the united nations and with the support of allies and friends.
WHEREAS, prosperity is never possible without peace; and
WHEREAS, Hawaii is a small and very open economy, dependent on trade across the Pacific for its prosperity and therefore dependent on peace across the Pacific; and
WHEREAS, the Asia-Pacific region is home to two possible conflict flash points, on the Korean peninsula and in the Taiwan Straits; and
WHEREAS, although we, the United States, sustain a powerful military making it possible to direct our foreign policy unilaterally, we understand the power and moral superiority of multi-lateral approaches; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-third Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2006, the Senate concurring, that we express our support for maintaining peace in the Asia-Pacific with the United Nations and with the support of allies and friends; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that we strongly support the President's positive policy in seeking a dialogue, in concert with our allies, South Korea and Japan, and with neighboring China and Russia, to have North Korea give up its nuclear program and to institute appropriate international safeguards, including on-site United Nations inspection and a United States pledge of "no first strike"; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that we wish to convey our gratitude to our men and women in the armed forces for their sacrifices to protect our security; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the President of the United States, the United States Secretary of State, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, the Majority Leader of the United States Senate, Hawaii's Congressional delegation, and the Governor of Hawaii.
