HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

requesting a management audit OF the university of Hawaii College of Education.

 

 

WHEREAS, public education is viewed as the key to the future success of our children and adolescents; and

WHEREAS, it is readily acknowledged that school administrators, teachers, and counselors deserve the best professional training possible to assist the students of our public schools in achieving the highest level of academic success possible; and

WHEREAS, public school students in Hawaii come from diverse cultural-ethnic groups; and

WHEREAS, it is important to ensure that students are provided role models that come from similar cultural-ethnic backgrounds as themselves; and

WHEREAS, persons from some cultural-ethnic groups in Hawaii are often underrepresented among the school administrators, teachers, and counselors who work in the Hawaii public school system; and

WHEREAS, the College of Education at the University of Hawaii is the primary institution of higher education that trains most of the school administrators, teachers, and counselors who work in the Hawaii public school system; and

WHEREAS, the College of Education is respected for providing quality training in preparing persons to work as administrators, teachers, and counselors in our State's public school system; and

WHEREAS, the College of Education at the University of Hawaii operates pursuant to a commitment to promote diversity in the recruitment, retention, and promotion of students, faculty members, and administrators at the University of Hawaii; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-third Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2006, the Senate concurring, that the Auditor is requested to conduct a management audit of the College of Education at the University of Hawaii to determine the college's success in achieving:

(1) Diversity in general;

(2) Increased cultural diversity among administrators, teachers, and counselors in the Hawaii public school system through the presence of persons from underrepresented groups; and

(3) Cultural diversity among the administrators and faculty members who work in the College of Education itself; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Auditor, the President of the University of Hawaii, and the Chairperson of the Board of Regents of the University of Hawaii.
