RESOLUTION
REQUESTING THE COUNTY OF MAUI, WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF THE DEPARTMENT OF LAND AND NATURAL RESOURCES, TO DETERMINE THE FEASIBILITY OF REDEVELOPING THE OLD NAHIKU SCHOOL SITE AND MAKING IT AVAILABLE AS A COMMUNITY FACILITY.
WHEREAS, located in Hana, Maui, the old Nahiku School was considered a treasure by the Nahiku community and was more than 50 years old prior to being recently destroyed in a fire; and
WHEREAS, due to its age, the old Nahiku School in Hana was qualified to be placed on the Hawaii Registry of Historic Places; and
WHEREAS, the site currently remains undeveloped and unused; and
WHEREAS, the Nahiku community needs a place to congregate so that they may share native Hawaiian cultural practices and traditions and have a central location for learning, information sharing, and other community-oriented events; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-third Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2006, the Senate concurring, that the County of Maui, with the assistance of the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DNLR), is requested to determine the feasibility of:
(1) Redeveloping the site of the old Nahiku School;
(2) Providing the necessary infrastructure;
(3) Constructing a replica of the old Nahiku School; and
(4) Making it available as a community facility;
and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County of Maui, with the assistance of DLNR, is requested to:
(1) Consult with the Hana community prior to developing its recommendations on redeveloping the old Nahiku School site to ascertain the needs and desires of the Hana community;
(2) Provide any cost estimates and development time lines that are appropriate to developing the old Nahiku School site as a community center; and
(3) Submit its findings and recommendations to the Legislature no later than 20 days prior to the convening of the Regular Session of 2007;
and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Governor, the Mayor of the County of Maui, and the Chairperson of the Board of Land and Natural Resources.
