TWENTY-THIRD LEGISLATURE, 2006

STATE OF HAWAII

A BILL FOR AN ACT

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII AT HILO.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. Over the past six years, University of Hawaii at Hilo has experienced unprecedented growth, with enrollment levels increasing every year since 1997, accounting for a twenty-five per cent increase in enrollment from 1997 to 2003. Despite this unprecedented growth, staffing levels in the office of student affairs have remained constant. Student services are in need of expansion to accommodate the substantial growth in enrollment. Student retention would benefit greatly as more students would remain and graduate from University of Hawaii at Hilo, thus contributing to the State's workforce development and economic diversification goals.
