HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

H.B. NO.

3113

TWENTY-THIRD LEGISLATURE, 2006

STATE OF HAWAII

A BILL FOR AN ACT

RELATING TO THE HAWAI`I HISTORY MUSEUM.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. The legislature finds that Hawai`i has many historical sites that tell the story of a particular group of people or a place, such as the Battleship Missouri, the Hawai`i Maritime Center, the Plantation Village, and the Mission Houses, to name a few. Each site tells the story from a certain perspective, like spokes on a wheel. There is no place, however, that provides a comprehensive perspective on the history of the various peoples and cultures that make up our island home, no "hub" to the spokes. A centralized institution that could provide the gathering point from where visitors and citizens alike could find connection and direction to the various "spokes" in the wheel would help to further the appreciation for our rich and diverse communities. The purpose of this Act is to appropriate funds for the creation of the Hawai`i Museum of History.

SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $______, or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2006-2007, for the creation of the Hawai`i Museum of History.

SECTION 3. The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of land and natural resources for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2006.
