HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

H.B. NO.

TWENTY-THIRD LEGISLATURE, 2006

STATE OF HAWAII

A BILL FOR AN ACT

relating to historic preservation.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. The legislature finds that it is in the best interest of the state to preserve the architecture, objects, and sites of the numerous cultures that make up our island community. Preservation of the history of our cultures not only helps to promote the tourism industry, it also helps to preserve for future generations the cultural identities of the various peoples that call Hawai`i home.

The legislature also finds that historic preservation was recognized as an issue of statewide importance through the proclamation of the Governor, declaring May 4th, 2005 as Hawai`i Historic Preservation Awareness Day, and with the introduction of legislation and resolutions that all seek to support the cause of preservation of historic sites. The purpose of this Act is to recognize the first Monday in May as "Historic Preservation Awareness Day."

SECTION 2. Chapter 6E, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

"§6E-A Historic Preservation Awareness Day. The first Monday in May shall be recognized and known as "Historic Preservation Awareness Day" in the state of Hawai`i."

SECTION 3. New statutory material is underscored.

SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
