A BILL FOR AN ACT
making an appropriation for reconstruction of historic old nahiku school.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. The old Nahiku school, in the district of Hana, TMK: second division 1-2-02:23, was more than fifty years old and qualified as a historic property. It was a treasure of the community until it was unfortunately destroyed recently by a fire. The site remains undeveloped and unused. The Nahiku community needs a place to gather and share Hawaiian cultural experiences such as hula, la`au lapa`au, and other cultural and historic matters.
The purpose of this Act is to:
(1) Require the department of land and natural resources to construct a replica of the old Nahiku school, to be made available to the Nahiku community for community activities; and
(2) Make an appropriation for the improvement of the site and the construction of a replica of the old Nahiku school.
SECTION 2. After consulting with residents of the Nahiku community, the department of land and natural resources is directed to redevelop the site by providing the necessary infrastructure and constructing a replica of the old Nahiku school on the site. The department of land and natural resources shall make the old Nahiku school replica available to the Nahiku community to gather and share Hawaiian historical and cultural activities.
SECTION 3. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $ or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2006-2007 for development of a replica of the old Nahiku school, in the district of Hana, Maui, TMK: second division 1-1-02:23.
The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of land and natural resources for the purposes of this Act.
SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2006.
