A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

relating to cultural and historic sites.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 2. (a) The department of land and natural resources shall work collaboratively with ethnic civic clubs throughout the state to develop an inventory of cultural or historic sites on public lands that are eligible for inclusion on the Hawaii register of historic places, the National Register of Historic Places, or other similar cultural or historic registers. The department, with input provided by the ethnic civic clubs, shall:

(1) Indicate whether any cultural or historic sites included in the inventory are endangered;

(2) Prioritize the sites in the inventory with respect to their inclusion on the various registers; and

(3) Provide estimates on the costs that may be incurred to have the sites in the inventory nominated to be placed on the various registers.

(b) The department shall conduct an inventory of state facilities to determine if any facility should be included on the Hawaii register of historic places, the National Register of Historic Places, or other similar cultural or historic register, for preservation purposes. The department shall:

(1) Prioritize the facilities included in the inventory with respect to their inclusion on the various registers; and

(2) Provide estimates on the costs that may be incurred to have the facilities nominated to be placed on the various registers.

SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $ or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2006-2007 for the department of land and natural resources to hire one FTE staff or fund contracts to carry out the duties specified under section 1 of this Act.

The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of land and natural resources for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2006.
