A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

relating to police officers.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. This State has some of the most qualified police officers in the nation. Many of Hawaii's police officers are actively recruited by other agencies. Consequently, the counties are experiencing difficulty recruiting and retaining police officers. County police officers are crucial to ensuring that Hawaii citizens are safe. It is important to assist the counties in recruiting and retaining qualified police officers.

The purpose of this Act is to appropriate funds to the counties for a one-time uniform allowance of up to $200 per police officer.

SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $        , or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2006-2007, as a grant-in-aid to the city and county of Honolulu for a one-time uniform allowance of up to $200 per police officer.

The sum appropriated shall be expended by the city and county of Honolulu for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 3. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $        , or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2006-2007, as a grant-in-aid to the county of Hawaii for a one-time uniform allowance of up to $200 per police officer.

The sum appropriated shall be expended by the county of Hawaii for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 4. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $        , or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2006-2007, as a grant-in-aid to the county of Maui for a one-time uniform allowance of up to $200 per police officer.

The sum appropriated shall be expended by the county of Maui for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 5. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $        , or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2006-2007, as a grant-in-aid to the county of Kauai for a one-time uniform allowance of up to $200 per police officer.

The sum appropriated shall be expended by the county of Kauai for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 6. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2050.
