A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

relating to motor vehicle safety.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. Chapter 291, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

"§291- Rearview cameras. (a) All motor vehicles with a gross vehicular weight rating equal to or greater than six thousand pounds shall be equipped with a rearview camera.

(b) Any legal or registered owner of the motor vehicle who violates this section or rules adopted by the director of transportation pursuant to this section shall be fined not more than $100.

(c) The director of transportation may adopt rules under chapter 91 necessary to carry out this section.

(d) For the purposes of this section, "rearview camera" means an apparatus mounted to the rear of the vehicle that includes a video screen within the cab of the motor vehicle that permits viewing of traffic conditions to the rear of a motor vehicle."

SECTION 2. This Act does not affect rights and duties that matured, penalties that were incurred, and proceedings that were begun, before its effective date.

SECTION 3. New statutory material is underscored.

SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
