Requires sentence for murder or attempted murder to run consecutive to any other sentence imposed in the same case when the victim is an on-duty police officer.

A BILL FOR AN ACT

SECTION 1. Chapter 706, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

"§706- Sentence for murder or attempted murder of on-duty law enforcement officer. When the court imposes sentence for first or second degree murder or attempted first or second degree murder where the offense is committed against an on-duty law enforcement officer, the sentence shall run consecutive to, not concurrent with, any sentence imposed at the same time for other offenses."

SECTION 2. This Act does not affect rights and duties that matured, penalties that were incurred, and proceedings that were begun, before its effective date.

SECTION 3. New statutory material is underscored.

SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
