The purpose of this briefing is to provide information to the Legislature on the current status of Hawaii's overall hurricane preparedness. In light of the devastation along the Gulf Coast due to Hurricane Katrina, the House Committee on Public Safety and Military Affairs and the Senate Committee on Education and Military Affairs believe that this fact-finding briefing is the first step in evaluating Hawaii's ability to minimize the loss of life and property that may occur as a result of a hurricane.

QUESTION AND ANSWER SESSION |
The presenters have been requested to focus on the following points of interest:
(1) The primary role and responsibility of each presenter in responding to a hurricane, including programs that educate residents on hurricane preparedness;
(2) Their overall ability to carry out their specific responsibilities;
(3) Recommendations on ways to better protect Hawaii from a hurricane and recommendations on what the Legislature can do to assist in this effort.
