RESOLUTION
REQUESTING THAT THE CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION OF THE STATE OF HAWAII PROTECT WORKERS FROM UNION VIOLENCE.
WHEREAS, every American has the right to expect a workplace free of violence; and
WHEREAS, some labor unions have resorted to violence, bribery, and extortion in their workplace unionization campaigns; and
WHEREAS, this violence has not only confined itself to the workplace, but has spilled over into other areas of American civic life (including political campaigns); and
WHEREAS, the people have a constitutional right to expect their free speech exercises to be respected by their fellow citizens and protected by law; and
WHEREAS, Congress has in the past sought to restrict union violence via the Hobbs Act, which was thrown out by judicial activism; and
BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-third Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2005, the House of Representatives concurring, that the Congressional Delegation of the State of Hawaii is respectfully requested to support the reauthorization of the Hobbs Act to restrict union violence; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the President of the United States, the President of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, and Hawaii's congressional delegation.
