A BILL FOR AN ACT
MAKING AN APPROPRIATION TO UPDATE TSUNAMI EVACUATION MAPS.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. The legislature finds that in the wake of the cataclysmic tsunami in the Indian Ocean on December 26, 2004, preparedness is the best way to help prevent the catastrophic loss of life. The State of Hawaii is recognized worldwide for its tsunami warning center within the state department of defense. There exists an immediate need to update evacuation maps in the event of a tsunami to include vertical evacuation and evacuation routes.
SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $274,000, or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2005-2006, for updating evacuation maps in the event of a tsunami.
SECTION 3. The sum appropriated shall be expended by the Department of Defense for the purposes of this Act.
SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2005.
