RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, the Department of Transportation has implemented programs such as Bike Plan Hawaii to ensure the safety of bicyclists and pedestrians; and

WHEREAS, Bike Plan Hawaii strives to protect bicyclists and pedestrians by offering safety tips, regulating and licensing bicycles, providing bicycle facilities, and serving as a source of information and valuable resource for enhancing the bicycle and pedestrian environment in Hawaii; and

WHEREAS, the position of Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator has remained vacant for some time and no apparent action has been taken to fill this position with a qualified candidate or to publicly advertise this vacancy; and

WHEREAS, the health and safety of Hawaii residents who employ these alternate methods of transportation is being compromised by the lack of proper leadership in this vital program; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-third Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2005,the Senate concurring, that the Department of Transportation is requested to take necessary steps to fill the vacant position of Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator for the Bike Plan Hawaii Project; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Director of the Department of Transportation.
